Fiesta! Perfect Peninsula Picnic
A celebration of Food on the Fleurieu Peninsula
during the month of October 2011
October is a month of celebration of food on the Fleurieu Peninsula, starting with the Fiesta! Fleurieu Peninsula Picnic on the October long weekend. For the entire month of October, there are a host of events to tempt the taste buds & to immerse in the food culture of the Fleurieu. Our food producers and local artisans will be welcoming visitors to their farms, cellar doors and produce markets, to showcase the best and freshest of Fleurieu Produce.
PERFECT PENINSULA PICNIC at GOOLWA ALIVE –
2ND OCTOBER 2011
Goolwa comes alive on the October long weekend with the tastes of the Fiesta! Perfect Peninsula Picnic. The Fleurieu Peninsula is the ideal place for a picnic and on Sunday 2 October the perfect location will be at Neighbour Reserve, Goolwa. Here, as part of Goolwa Alive, you will be able to spread your picnic blanket on manicured lawns, stock your picnic basket with produce that is fresh, the best and served to you direct from the growers and makers. Entry is free to the public, gates opening at 11 and food served until 6pm.
Rachel McMillan, Chair of Fleurieu Peninsula Food said “Gathering the ingredients will be half the fun! You will be able to or create your own picnic from a delicious array of food and wines on offer from our local producers. There will be lamb and goat on a spit, freshly baked breads; crisp, tasty salads, full flavoured cheeses, new season olives and oils and so much more to choose from. Currency Creek Winery will be serving wine to perfectly match your selections whilst you listen to the fabulous sounds of Tane and the Ciaram Granger duo.
CHEESEMAKING with Denise Riches – 20th OCTOBER 2011
Chefs of the Fleurieu spend a day on the farm. Denise Riches of Hindmarsh Valley Dairy will lead the chefs through the process of artisan cheese making. Herding the goats at sunrise, milking, working with the raw product and cooking a communal lunch, the day on the farm will greatly increase the knowledge of participants and give them a rich understanding of the seasonality of this fine product.
FLEURIEU PENINSULA OLIVE AWARDS & PUNTERS PICK
The Fleurieu Peninsula is an olive grower’s paradise. Visitors to the Fleurieu Peninsula soon come to realise that olive oil has become a local passion and the focus of an evolving regional cuisine. The Fleurieu Peninsula Food Olive Awards are designed to assist in the development of regional distinction for varieties predominantly grown on the Fleurieu Peninsula and attract national entries.
After the official judging for the Fleurieu Olive awards during October, the highest scoring oils will be offered for tasting for the "Punters’ Pick", a people’s choice award at the Victor Harbour Farmers Market and Willunga Farmers Market during Fiesta! Visitors to the Farmers Markets will be asked to fill in a simple form and rate the oils in order of preference.
‘Punters Picks’ will be held at the following farmers markets,
so come and taste and make your pick!
Victor Harbour Farmers Market – 15th October
Willunga Farmers Market – 22nd October
